33. MOLD: Can That Musty Smell Make You Sick?
I learned much from today's podcast with mold expert Bridgit Danner.
I've never given much thought about mold and the impact it could have on chronic disease or even cancer!
When Bridgit explained that chemical warfare is often made from a mold, she got my attention!
If mold is strong enough to be used in a bomb, what kind of havoc can it create in my body?
Listen to today's episode to learn more about this fascinating topic.
Information About Today’s Guest, Bridgit Danner:

The Ultimate Guide to Toxic Mold Recovery: Take Back Your Home, Health & Life
Your Complete Guide to Health Recovery from Toxic Mold
According to Dr. Isaac Eliaz:
"You may not be aware of it, but mold is probably affecting your health. So even if it’s not on your mind, “how to detox your body from mold” should be something we all need to be asking.
Even if mold is making you sick, you might not know it’s the source of your symptoms. That’s because mold toxicity can act like many other conditions, so it often goes misdiagnosed and untreated. Exposure can cause many different symptoms, including:
Fatigue
Cough
Shortness of breath
Fever
Headache
Joint pain
Memory problems
Dizziness
Sinus infections
Wheezing
Trouble concentrating
Sensitivity to light
Skin rash
Digestive problems
One of the main reasons mold toxins can cause so many different symptoms is this: These toxins can suppress or damage your immune system. Not only can they bring on symptoms themselves, they can make you more vulnerable to other illnesses.
Surrounded by Mold
Mold exposure is shockingly common. It’s found in the air, damp or water-damaged buildings, even the food you’re eating. Foods that commonly contain mold include cereal grains, nuts, spices, coffee, bulk foods (like the kind you buy from bins to save money) and dairy products.
You come across mold inside and outside, and it can travel around with you. Mold spores can attach to things like:
Clothing
Shoes
Pets
Reusable grocery bags
That means it can come home with you from just about anywhere. And if it ends up somewhere even slightly damp, it will grow and multiply.
In nature, mold speeds up the break down (decomposition) of things like dead trees and fallen leaves. Some molds are used to make cheese or create antibiotics.
But many types of mold can be hazardous to your health. These molds produce mycotoxins, poisons that can cause severe health problems and a wide variety of symptoms.
The two most common harmful mycotoxins are aflatoxin and ochratoxin, and exposure to either (or both) of these can trigger substantial health issues — from chronic allergies to cancer.
What’s more, if your body can’t remove these toxins on its own, they can slip into long-term storage to cause lasting or recurring damage.
Mycotoxins Damage Your Health
Mycotoxins are sneaky. While mold itself can’t enter your bloodstream — though it can hang around and colonize in spots like your nostrils and lungs — mycotoxins can get into your bloodstream and circulate throughout your body.
These opportunistic toxins can hijack your immune system, making you more vulnerable to infections. If your immune system is already compromised (such as people with autoimmune conditions or undergoing cancer treatment), mycotoxins take advantage. If you’re healthy, they can make you very sick.
Studies show that mycotoxins can:
Cause lung inflammation that can make it harder to breathe
Disrupt your gut health by reducing beneficial bacteria and encouraging pathogens
Trigger chronic fatigue syndrome
Affect brain function and cognition
Cause liver damage, including cancer
Worsen allergy and asthma symptoms
Unfortunately, mold toxicity is frequently misdiagnosed. Because of its wide-ranging effects, it’s typically mistaken for other conditions including depression, multiple sclerosis, or autoimmune conditions. Plus, because mycotoxins are opportunistic, they’re often connected with debilitating diseases such as Lyme disease, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and fibromyalgia."

30. Can Estrogen Cause Breast Cancer?
I loved this interview with my naturopathic oncologist, Dr. Laura James.
She is a wealth of information and was a great support to me during my breast cancer battle.
We discussed estrogen's role in breast cancer and how too much can be problematic. According to Dr. James, excess estrogen (we pick up a lot of additional estrogen from using plastic and cosmetics) may encourage cancer growth. However, she states that the "jury is still out" on whether estrogen causes cancer.
We also talk about consuming soy products (spoiler alert, I eat soy!) and if some soy products are better than others.
We also discussed a few products I use and that Dr. James recommends for those gosh-darn hot flashes!
Her website is a powerful resource for anyone fighting breast cancer or trying to avoid it! Visit LauraJamesND.com.

Being around Wi-Fi can disrupt melatonin production, which can impact your sleep.
Studies also show that women who have disrupted sleep (often due to low melatonin levels) have a higher risk of breast cancer.
Distance is your friend when it comes to EMF exposure so try to stay away from Wi-Fi routers and cell towers and never put your phone against your body (skin or head!).
She also told us about the MRI cell phone study with Dr. Lisa Bailey. She studied women who carried their cells phone in their sports bras. On breast MRI imaging, the women who ended up with breast cancer had tumors that mimicked the pattern of their phones.
August suggests we download books and movies and then watch in airplane mode to reduce exposure.

Dr. Leigh Erin Connealy
Dr. Connealy is leading a cancer prevention revolution that focuses on treating the patient with the disease and not the disease of the patient while determining the origin of the illness. She is the author of The Cancer Revolution, which has revolutionized the cancer treatment landscape.
We had a riveting discussion about the fact that the death rate from cancer hasn't changed in the last 50 years.
I find that statement shocking. Millions of dollars are invested yearly in cancer research; how could it be possible that the death rate from cancer hasn't changed?
In her book, Dr. C. cites a Japanese study that found that we have more than 75 million cancer cells in our body at any given time, and usually, our immune system keeps these cells in check. But when the immune system becomes compromised over a long period, these cells can begin to multiply.
Dr. C. also shared that there are over 10 RX written for every man, woman, and child in the US.

Jamie Winship
Author of one of my favorite books, Living Fearless.
I wish I'd met Jamie and his wife Donna thirty years ago! I would have learned so much from them about fear, managing fear, and not making decisions based on FEAR!
But, sure grateful to know both of them now. I've learned how to manage my fear, but it has taken a bit of practice.
Jamie says that we can ALL manage our fear, and it might be as easy as taking a few deep breaths and pushing the pause button when we get triggered.
One of the techniques I've learned from Jamie is that when life starts to go sideways, I ask myself, Is God for me, against me, or indifferent?
Well, I know God is for me, and asking myself that question in the middle of a fearful moment always seems to calm me down and allow me to get a handle on my thoughts.

Founder of WaveBlock
Ben has been in the real estate world his entire career, and it was out of necessity that he created his product.
He told me he bought an EMF mentor to check his baby's room for radiation. He was shocked when he discovered how much radiation was around the crib. So, he researched and learned how to create a baby blanket that would deflect the waves.
He then used that tech to create his product, Wave Block.
Necessity is indeed the mother of invention!

Jodi Cohen
Founder of Vibrant Blue Oils
A huge takeaway that I didn't hear the first time I listened! Jodi said that when we experience anxiety or panic, it's often a right frontal lobe issue. So, here's her simple hack, stimulate the left side of your frontal lobe to help balance your system and lower your stress and anxiety. Plug the right side of your nostril and inhale out of your left nostril. The key point, smell something in the left nostril. She suggested smelling an orange or a flower. But bottom line, Jodi said smelling something out of the left side, taking about 3-4 breaths, can lower your anxiety!

27. Cancer Made Us Better: A Chat with My Husband
I sure wish I had known that there were resources for caregivers during my cancer journey.
Steve and I didn't even think that maybe he would need to be supported or at least have someone to talk to about what he was going through. I was a mess for a few weeks, and he was my rock. But who was his rock? Yes, he is a man of great faith, and we both relied on God to get us through this season. But day to day, we each needed someone to talk to, to vent to, and for someone to say, "I'm here for you even if you don't think you need me."
I had an incredible group of girlfriends (including my precious mom and two daughters) that came alongside me. Kathy (who was two years ahead of me on her breast cancer journey), along with Kim and Patty, dropped everything on my diagnosis day (Sept 1st) to rush over to my house with pink bracelets that we would all wear and Rombauer Chardonnay that we would all drink, haha.
Kim left me daily phone messages in an attempt to make me laugh. The best one was when she accidentally flushed her Tiffany sunglasses down the toilet at Nordstrom-I laughed until I cried on that one :)
The most challenging time for me was telling my mom and the kids. So hard, I had to have Steve tell my mom. She had to put the phone down she was crying so hard.
My church family supported me, my book club, family and friends, and my C3 group (Christian business group of sisters in Christ), and I was given a breast cancer mentor, Liza, through Imerman Angels.
Steve had some friends he shared with (he's also in a C3 group) and a few other guys, but he needed more support.
I'm hopeful that you can discover better ways to support caregivers through our mistakes. Looking back, we would have set up an appointment with a family counselor to discuss the different aspects of cancer support. We also would have reached out to Imerman Angels to get Steve a mentor- this is an incredible service they offer, mentor support for caregivers - all for free!

26. Hollywood, Health, Hope: A Conversation with Samantha Harris
I thought I was an energizer bunny, but this gal ran circles around me, haha.
I had so much fun chatting with Samantha, and we realized we both had so much in common (minus the four Emmy® nominations and hanging out with the Kardashians).
When I got my diagnosis, people said, “how could you possibly get cancer? You’re the healthiest person I know.”
Her friends asked Samantha the same questions. Samantha has always been the “healthy one” throughout her life. You know, that person that orders the salad while everyone else is munching on the bacon cheeseburger.
Samantha’s cancer diagnosis started her on a mission to rethink what her healthy looked like; was she truly living her healthiest life?
When she was on camera wearing skin-tight clothing, there was no space for sweating, so she would pull out the big guns and spray on antiperspirant. One of the ways your body gets rid of toxins is through sweating. After her cancer diagnosis, she began to wonder if all the steps she had to take to be successful in her career might have contributed to her breast cancer diagnosis.
Samantha went on a journey to find “her healthiest healthy,” and the results of that quest became the best-selling book, Your Healthiest Healthy.

25. Get Outside and Play! Can That Reduce Cancer Risk?
Sleep can reset your system and allow your body to do what it does best-repair cells that have been damaged!
Are you a good sleeper? Do you fall asleep quickly, or do you get a second wind in the evening? Did you know that spending time on your laptop at night can send a message to your brain that makes it think that it's mid-day and not midnight?
Today's episode with Hilda explores simple ancestral hacks (going outside to get the morning sun) that can help your body reset your circadian rhythm so you can fall asleep faster and stay asleep. And, as long as you're outside, why not take your shoes off and play?
We also discussed how our ancestors spent three-quarters of their time outside, and today, we spend three-quarters of our time inside; the switch isn't doing our bodies any favors.
Hilda teaches us to "stack our hacks" to maximize our health benefits.
Hilda mentions the two experts below during our conversation.
