27. Cancer Made Us Better: A Chat with My Husband
I sure wish I had known that there were resources for caregivers during my cancer journey.
Steve and I didn't even think that maybe he would need to be supported or at least have someone to talk to about what he was going through. I was a mess for a few weeks, and he was my rock. But who was his rock? Yes, he is a man of great faith, and we both relied on God to get us through this season. But day to day, we each needed someone to talk to, to vent to, and for someone to say, "I'm here for you even if you don't think you need me."
I had an incredible group of girlfriends (including my precious mom and two daughters) that came alongside me. Kathy (who was two years ahead of me on her breast cancer journey), along with Kim and Patty, dropped everything on my diagnosis day (Sept 1st) to rush over to my house with pink bracelets that we would all wear and Rombauer Chardonnay that we would all drink, haha.
Kim left me daily phone messages in an attempt to make me laugh. The best one was when she accidentally flushed her Tiffany sunglasses down the toilet at Nordstrom-I laughed until I cried on that one :)
The most challenging time for me was telling my mom and the kids. So hard, I had to have Steve tell my mom. She had to put the phone down she was crying so hard.
My church family supported me, my book club, family and friends, and my C3 group (Christian business group of sisters in Christ), and I was given a breast cancer mentor, Liza, through Imerman Angels.
Steve had some friends he shared with (he's also in a C3 group) and a few other guys, but he needed more support.
I'm hopeful that you can discover better ways to support caregivers through our mistakes. Looking back, we would have set up an appointment with a family counselor to discuss the different aspects of cancer support. We also would have reached out to Imerman Angels to get Steve a mentor- this is an incredible service they offer, mentor support for caregivers - all for free!

26. Hollywood, Health, Hope: A Conversation with Samantha Harris
I thought I was an energizer bunny, but this gal ran circles around me, haha.
I had so much fun chatting with Samantha, and we realized we both had so much in common (minus the four Emmy® nominations and hanging out with the Kardashians).
When I got my diagnosis, people said, “how could you possibly get cancer? You’re the healthiest person I know.”
Her friends asked Samantha the same questions. Samantha has always been the “healthy one” throughout her life. You know, that person that orders the salad while everyone else is munching on the bacon cheeseburger.
Samantha’s cancer diagnosis started her on a mission to rethink what her healthy looked like; was she truly living her healthiest life?
When she was on camera wearing skin-tight clothing, there was no space for sweating, so she would pull out the big guns and spray on antiperspirant. One of the ways your body gets rid of toxins is through sweating. After her cancer diagnosis, she began to wonder if all the steps she had to take to be successful in her career might have contributed to her breast cancer diagnosis.
Samantha went on a journey to find “her healthiest healthy,” and the results of that quest became the best-selling book, Your Healthiest Healthy.

25. Get Outside and Play! Can That Reduce Cancer Risk?
Sleep can reset your system and allow your body to do what it does best-repair cells that have been damaged!
Are you a good sleeper? Do you fall asleep quickly, or do you get a second wind in the evening? Did you know that spending time on your laptop at night can send a message to your brain that makes it think that it's mid-day and not midnight?
Today's episode with Hilda explores simple ancestral hacks (going outside to get the morning sun) that can help your body reset your circadian rhythm so you can fall asleep faster and stay asleep. And, as long as you're outside, why not take your shoes off and play?
We also discussed how our ancestors spent three-quarters of their time outside, and today, we spend three-quarters of our time inside; the switch isn't doing our bodies any favors.
Hilda teaches us to "stack our hacks" to maximize our health benefits.
Hilda mentions the two experts below during our conversation.

24. Can Stress Cause Cancer?
My big takeaways from today's podcast:
1: The importance of managing stress
2: Ancestral hacks such as going outside first thing in the morning to help reset your circadian rhythm
3: Turning off the news!
We also discussed the role each of us plays in our health and disease prevention. What if you get cancer surgery but then return to your same environment? Disease isn't always about diet! What kind of thoughts do you think? Are your thoughts positive or negative? Do you surround yourself with encouraging people or discouraging people?
I love this quote Hilda told me from Dr. Jack Kruse, “You can't heal in the same environment that made you sick."

23. Simple Detox Hacks - A Conversation With Dr. Tom O'Bryan
I met Dr. O’Bryan at my national nutrition conference in April.
While he certainly is one of the world’s leading experts in gluten, he also proved to be an expert on the toxins in our environment. For example, he got my attention when he mentioned that the chemicals in nail polish hit our bloodstream within four minutes.
According to research, 50% of men and 41% of women will develop cancer in their lifetime. What is causing this epidemic of cancer in our world? I know that there’s no easy answer, but I think we’d be foolish not to take a look at the toxins that surround us as possible contributors to this disease.
According to Dr. O’Bryan, we are in contact with over 700,000 toxins daily! Listen to today’s podcast to learn some of his simple hacks to reduce the toxins in your life; spoiler alert, one of these hacks was used by NASA! 😊
Dr. Tom O'Bryan’s goal for you is ‘Making It Easy To Do the Right Thing’. As an internationally recognized, admired and compassionate speaker focusing on food sensitivities, environmental toxins, and the development of autoimmune diseases, Dr. Tom's audiences discover that it is through a clear understanding of how you got to where you are, that you and your Dr. can figure out what it will take to get you well. Dr. O’Bryan is considered a ‘Sherlock Holmes’ for chronic disease and teaches that recognizing and addressing the underlying mechanisms that activate an immune response is the map to the highway towards better health.
His 2016 ground-breaking book, winner of the National Book Award and ranked #1 in several categories on Amazon.com, The Autoimmune Fix, outlines the step-by-step development of degenerative diseases and gives the tools to identify our disease process years before the symptoms are obvious and how to turn your health around, one step at a time. He is the founder of www.theDr.com and the visionary behind ‘The Gluten Summit - A Grain of Truth’, bringing together 29 of the world’s experts on the gluten connection to diseases, disorders, and a wide range of symptoms and ages. 22. What You Smell Impacts Your Health - Essential Oils & Health!
According to Dr. Josh Axe:
Essential oils have been used for thousands of years in various cultures for medicinal and health purposes. Because of their antidepressant, stimulating, detoxifying, antibacterial, antiviral and calming properties, they continue to gain popularity as natural, safe and cost-effective therapy for a number of health concerns.
There’s no wonder why considering the high cost of health care bills and the side effects of conventional medications. Adding such oils to your personal medicine cabinet and lifestyle can make a world of difference.
I’m so excited for you to listen to today’s podcast with Jodi Cohen, founder of the essential oils company, Vibrant Blue Oils.
We had a very simple conversation about health.
Eat, sleep, move and POOP!
Can health really be that simple? YES! Please join us for today’s podcast repeat so you can truly understand that good health can be a simple eating, moving and well, pooping 😉
I started using essential oils thirty years ago on my clients. Back then it was a little too “woo-woo” to get my clients excited about using them.
Fast forward to today where there’s scientific research touting the benefits of essential oil use, woot-woot!
Jodi goes on to explain that our sense of smell is 10,000 times more sensitive than any of our other senses.
I’m a HUGE fan of essential oils and I think use them on a daily basis.
Here’s a few of my favorites: Parasympathetic Blend (I use this first thing in the morning to set my system up to stay calm throughout my day), I also use the Calm oil during the day and the Circadian Rhythm Blend at night.

21. Clean Beauty – A Conversation with Gabriel of Gabriel Cosmetics, Inc.
I was shocked when Gabriel told me that we each have 5-7 pounds of skin and that our skin is our biggest organ. The skin works as a filter, so what goes on our skin goes into our bodies. Yikes! It made me think about what types of products I use on my skin, hair, and nails.
Ironically, I just returned from my annual National Association of Nutritional Professionals conference. One of the speakers mentioned that within 4 minutes of using nail polish, the chemicals from the polish hit our bloodstream.
When you hear two messages within days that sound the same, I know it's a sign!
One of my big takeaways from my conversation with Gabriel is how we can make our own or DIY natural products. For example, he likes to use Jojoba oil as a moisturizer, and he cooks with essential oils.
Listen to the podcast episode to learn more of his DIY secrets!
Gabriel is also offering a coupon to podcast listeners: Enos25 for 25% off!
Gabriel De Santino is the founder and CEO of Gabriel Cosmetics, Inc., a global natural beauty empire whose brands include Gabriel, Zuzu Luxe, and Clean Kids Naturally.
Born of Latin descent and raised off the coast of Mexico, Gabriel, at an early age, was naturally drawn to the coastal life and heavily influenced by his grandmother's holistic practices. At the age of 18, Gabriel moved to Seattle, Washington. He knew the Pacific Northwest had a rising fashion and beauty scene and joined the movement at a local beauty counter. It was there that Gabriel fell in love with makeup but was also inspired to look past the made-up face. He soon secured a position at a salon & spa to learn more about the industry and how he may change it. After attending aesthetician school, he quickly discovered he wanted to first correct the skin before covering it up, a mantra he still practices today. As an aesthetician, he struggled because women were using toxic products on their skin. But, given his background as a naturopath and familiarity with sea botanicals, his calling was loud and clear.
In 1992, he solicited his friends and family's moral and financial support. As a result, he started Gabriel Organics, a complete line of all-natural, vegan, gluten-free, and cruelty-free skincare products made with seaweed as its hero ingredient.
Gabriel Cosmetic Inc.'s prestige and diverse brand portfolio were created out of one man's vision of clearly defining natural beauty and being able to provide affordable and accessible vegan beauty products to consumers worldwide.
Gabriel Cosmetics, Inc. is headquartered in its original area of Redmond, Washington, with over 25 employees and its fearless leader, Gabriel De Santino, leading the charge every step of the way.

20. Meditation is Medication - Part Two of My Conversation with Dr. Leigh Erin Connealy
My podcast guest this week is part two of my conversation with Dr. C, and she says that Meditation is the Medication.
We need to get a better handle on our stress. Stress is a normal part of our day. She is concerned about the long-term chronic stress that will raise our levels of inflammation. When inflammation is high for long periods, our body gets very challenged, and that's how diseases like cancer can occur.
She told me how years ago, she went to La Jolla to meditate with Deepak Chopra and walked away thinking, well, nobody will want to do that! Fast forward twenty years, and she tells me the science is clear, Meditation can help you lower your stress levels, lower your levels of inflammation, and help you sleep more soundly. In addition, these benefits will support your immune system so it can do its job-killing invaders such as cancer cells.
I know I need to manage my stress better.
I'm a hyper person. I was always in trouble for talking too much in school.
I was even prescribed Ritalin for a time.
I also have a hard time sitting still, but I also want to be a more peaceful person, ahhh!
I make Meditation more stressful than it should be. Meditation is just one more item that I don't accomplish on my daily to-do list. Instead of stressing out about how I'm not meditating, I will make it work for me.
I'm going to start small:
Move my body a bit, go for a short walk or stretch a bit.
Get outside.
Focus on breathing.
I will observe my surroundings and be grateful.
What I do to manage my stress might not be a traditional type of meditation but it’s a start!

19. Stress & Cancer - a Candid Conversation with Dr. Leigh Erin Connealy
Dr. Connealy is leading a cancer prevention revolution that focuses on treating the patient with the disease and not the disease of the patient while determining the origin of the illness. She is the author of The Cancer Revolution, which has revolutionized the landscape of cancer treatment.
We had a riveting discussion about the fact that the death rate from cancer hasn't changed in the last 50 years. I find that statement shocking. Millions of dollars are invested yearly in cancer research; how could it be possible that the death rate from cancer hasn't changed?
In her book, Dr. C. sites a Japanese study that found that we have more than 75 million cancer cells in our body at any given time, and usually, our immune system keeps these cells in check. But when the immune system becomes compromised over a long period, these cells can begin to multiply.
Give today's podcast episode a listen to hear her fascinating answer!
Other topics we covered:
Stress
Only 5% or less of our cancer risk appears to be due to genetics.
Can exercise help prevent cancer?
The link between EMFs and disease
The role toxins play in cancer and other diseases
Cancer is now the leading cause of death in children
Nanoplastics
According to Dr. Connealy, we are ingesting about a credit card size each day of plastic. Unfortunately, eating plastic isn't doing our health any favors. The latest research shows that these nano plastic/particles, due to their small size and molecular properties, can penetrate the cells and cause harmful effects.
With over 30 years of experience, Dr. Connealy has become a prominent leader in the field of Functional Medicine. She utilizes the best of all sciences, including conventional, homeopathic, eastern medicine, and modern medicine. She is the founder and medical director of the Cancer Center for Healing and Center for New Medicine. The combined 30,000 S.F. clinics have become the largest integrative medical clinic in North America and have been visited by over 70,000 patients.

18. Protect Your Peace to Prevent Disease (with Dr. Gregg Jantz)
Mental health, stress, and anxiety: we've all experienced these feelings.
I work to protect my peace.
What does that mean?
I'm careful about who is in my life, and I'm cautious about what I listen to because that goes directly to my mind.
Listen to today's podcast with Dr. Gregg Jantz to learn his easy tips to help you protect your peace. He was very clear with me that there are things we can do daily to have more peace and, thus, better health. Here are some of my favorite tips that I do daily to create more peace in my life (all of my tips received a big thumbs up from Dr. J!). I've worked hard to surround myself with encouraging and kind people.
I've also canceled our television cable, which allows me to choose how and when I hear the news.
I had to recognize what I could control to guard my peace.
What I can control today:
What I'm hearing.
What I'm eating and drinking.
How did I respond to negative situations or people?
My attitude.
That. Is. It.
Once I realized that I could control these things and only these things (newsflash, I had to learn I couldn't control people), my stress levels started to change, and I found my joy returning.
Here's the daily ritual I do to protect my peace:
I start my day with a glass of water while I look out my window and not at my PHONE.
I make a cup of coffee and walk outside, rain or shine, and look toward the sun, not at the sun as that can damage your eyes.
I return inside and read my Bible and write in my gratitude journal.
I take five deep breaths and do a little bit of stretching at the top of every hour.
Dr. Jantz is the founder of The Center A Place of HOPE in Edmonds, Washington, voted a Top Ten facility for Depression Treatment in the United States. Dr. Jantz pioneered Whole Person Care in the 1980s and is a world-renowned expert on depression, anxiety, eating disorders, technology addiction, and abuse.
Dr. Jantz is a best-selling author of 40 books and a go-to media authority on mental and behavioral health afflictions, appearing on CBS, ABC, NBC, Fox, and CNN.
