I LOVE HIGH-QUALITY PROTEIN.
Years ago, I had no clue what I was doing in the kitchen. I asked my chef friend, Gina, "How do you make chicken taste better?" She told me, "Boneless, skinless, tasteless." She explained that cooking with the bone adds flavor, moisture, and even a nutrient boost.
Fast forward to today, and finding bone-in chicken can be a challenge. That’s why I love ButcherBox! They offer free-range, organic bone-in chicken thighs, checking all my boxes. And right now, you can get free bone-in chicken thighs in every box—up to three pounds for the next year! Plus, enjoy $30 off your first box.

Martinelli’s Sparkling Apple Cider
Let me tell you about my favorite mocktail: Martinelli's Sparkling Apple Cider. It's a fantastic substitute for champagne and perfect for summer drinks.
After my breast cancer diagnosis, I became more mindful of what I consume after a 2016 study from the University of Houston revealed that alcohol can fuel estrogen, promoting breast cancer growth. According to breastcancer.org, just three drinks a week can increase breast cancer risk by 15%.
You can find Martinelli's Apple Cider everywhere. Enjoy your summer and sip on some delightful mocktails!

79. What I've Learned in 2024
Thursday Jun 06, 2024
Thursday Jun 06, 2024
I always love looking back on what I’ve learned and the first part of 2024 hasn’t disappointed. I’ve had some incredible guests on the show this year and I’ve taken the time to distill some powerful insights from our conversations. Today I want to re-share my top takeaways of the year so far.
First up, we have some incredible clips from Dr. Josh Axe, a world-renowned naturopath, leadership author, and speaker. Dr. Axe experienced a debilitating medical accident that left him unable to walk for a year, during which he wrote his book, “Think This, Not That.” The lessons he learned are truly golden, and I’ve picked my top four lessons to share with you, including the power of mindset.
Next, we’ll revisit our episode with Liz Curran from the Radical Remission Project. We explored the 10 healing factors common among individuals who achieve radical remissions from diseases like cancer. One fascinating topic was the concept of being “too good of a patient” and the importance of laughter in healing. Did you know kids laugh about 300 times a day, while adults only manage 8-12 laughs daily? It’s a reminder for all of us to embrace our inner child and find joy in everyday moments.
The last lesson I want to share came from Kris Carr, an Oprah Super Soul guest, and a 21-year cancer survivor. Kriss lives with 24 inoperable tumors and has learned to love her body, tumors and all. Her journey of self-love and resilience is profoundly moving, especially since I struggled with body acceptance after my own breast surgery.
Don’t miss these powerful lessons and heartwarming stories. Hit play now and get ready to be inspired!

78. Can Eating Organ Meats Help Prevent Cancer or Other Diseases? (RE-RELEASE)
Thursday May 30, 2024
Thursday May 30, 2024
Did you know that eating organs can be good for you?
PLEASE KEEP READING!
Trust me, I get it. When people mentioned eating organ meat, I had flashbacks to my childhood and my grandma making liver and onions.
Believe me when I say it wasn't a positive experience.
Humans have eaten organ meats since prehistoric times, and they're rich in vitamins, minerals, and amino acids – including some that aren't commonly found in plant foods.
Today's podcast guest is James Barry, celebrity chef to George Clooney and Barbra Streisand (to namedrop a bit). James knows the power of eating organ meats but he also understands the ICK FACTOR.
That's why he created a super yummy way to include organ meats in your daily diet by using salt! He created a savory salt (to me it tastes like a healthy version of Lowery's season salt), and I use it on eggs, salads, and popcorn.
Listen to today's podcast to get the inside scoop on WHY organ meats are so important to consume and DID James cook organ meats for George Clooney.
James Barry’s 16 + years in the culinary field started as a private chef cooking for celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Mariska Hargitay, George Clooney, Gerard Butler, Sean “Puffy” Combs, Barbra Streisand, and John Cusack. Most recently, James launched his first functional food product, Pluck, an organ-based seasoning. It's the first of its kind and an amazingly easy and delicious way for people to get organ meats into their diet.
Follow James Barry on Instagram (@chefjamesbarry), and add more organ meat into your diet with Pluck!

I was SHOCKED to hear that when I buy frozen fish, it's frozen TWICE. It's usually frozen right after being caught, defrosted, processed, and then frozen again.

I called a friend who works at ButcherBox and asked her about the process with their salmon. She assured me that BB only freezes the fish ONCE! Which helps preserve the nutrients and taste. The big one for me is texture. When I eat fish, I want a firm texture, not rubbery!

Today, we're talking about a topic that might make you squirm in your seat—parasites and worms! These creepy crawlies can hitch into our bodies through contaminated water, food, and less-than-sanitary conditions and wreak havoc.
Now, I'll be the first to admit that when my guest Kim Rogers, also known as “The Worm Queen” of TikTok, reached out to me, I hesitated. Who wants to know about the creatures lurking inside us, right? But knowledge is power and if understanding more about parasites and worms could help me stay healthy, it’s time for an uncomfortable conversation.
We talked about the not-so-glamorous aspects of bodily functions—yes, that means we went into the topic of pooping quite a bit. But beyond the initial discomfort, Kim shares some invaluable insights into detox pathways and what she calls the three P's: peeing, perspiration, and, you guessed it, pooping.
So, buckle up, folks. Let’s learn all about these little buggers - and how to protect ourselves from them!

76. MOLD: Can That Musty Smell Make You Sick? (RE-RELEASE)
Thursday May 16, 2024
Thursday May 16, 2024
I learned much from today's podcast with mold expert Bridgit Danner.
I've never given much thought about mold and the impact it could have on chronic disease or even cancer!
When Bridgit explained that chemical warfare is often made from a mold, she got my attention!
If mold is strong enough to be used in a bomb, what kind of havoc can it create in my body?
Listen to today's episode to learn more about this fascinating topic.
Information About Today’s Guest, Bridgit Danner:

Links to Bridgit's Books:
The Ultimate Guide to Toxic Mold Recovery: Take Back Your Home, Health & Life
Your Complete Guide to Health Recovery from Toxic Mold
According to Dr. Isaac Eliaz:
"You may not be aware of it, but mold is probably affecting your health. So even if it’s not on your mind, “how to detox your body from mold” should be something we all need to be asking.
Even if mold is making you sick, you might not know it’s the source of your symptoms. That’s because mold toxicity can act like many other conditions, so it often goes misdiagnosed and untreated. Exposure can cause many different symptoms, including:
Fatigue
Cough
Shortness of breath
Fever
Headache
Joint pain
Memory problems
Dizziness
Sinus infections
Wheezing
Trouble concentrating
Sensitivity to light
Skin rash
Digestive problems
One of the main reasons mold toxins can cause so many different symptoms is this: These toxins can suppress or damage your immune system. Not only can they bring on symptoms themselves, they can make you more vulnerable to other illnesses.
Surrounded by Mold
Mold exposure is shockingly common. It’s found in the air, damp or water-damaged buildings, even the food you’re eating. Foods that commonly contain mold include cereal grains, nuts, spices, coffee, bulk foods (like the kind you buy from bins to save money) and dairy products.
You come across mold inside and outside, and it can travel around with you. Mold spores can attach to things like:
Clothing
Shoes
Pets
Reusable grocery bags
That means it can come home with you from just about anywhere. And if it ends up somewhere even slightly damp, it will grow and multiply.
In nature, mold speeds up the break down (decomposition) of things like dead trees and fallen leaves. Some molds are used to make cheese or create antibiotics.
But many types of mold can be hazardous to your health. These molds produce mycotoxins, poisons that can cause severe health problems and a wide variety of symptoms.
The two most common harmful mycotoxins are aflatoxin and ochratoxin, and exposure to either (or both) of these can trigger substantial health issues — from chronic allergies to cancer.
What’s more, if your body can’t remove these toxins on its own, they can slip into long-term storage to cause lasting or recurring damage.
Mycotoxins Damage Your Health
Mycotoxins are sneaky. While mold itself can’t enter your bloodstream — though it can hang around and colonize in spots like your nostrils and lungs — mycotoxins can get into your bloodstream and circulate throughout your body.
These opportunistic toxins can hijack your immune system, making you more vulnerable to infections. If your immune system is already compromised (such as people with autoimmune conditions or undergoing cancer treatment), mycotoxins take advantage. If you’re healthy, they can make you very sick.
Studies show that mycotoxins can:
Cause lung inflammation that can make it harder to breathe
Disrupt your gut health by reducing beneficial bacteria and encouraging pathogens
Trigger chronic fatigue syndrome
Affect brain function and cognition
Cause liver damage, including cancer
Worsen allergy and asthma symptoms
Unfortunately, mold toxicity is frequently misdiagnosed. Because of its wide-ranging effects, it’s typically mistaken for other conditions including depression, multiple sclerosis, or autoimmune conditions. Plus, because mycotoxins are opportunistic, they’re often connected with debilitating diseases such as Lyme disease, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and fibromyalgia."

75. Pressing Pause: Navigating Cancer with Dr. Laura James, Naturopathic Oncologist
Thursday May 09, 2024
Thursday May 09, 2024
In today’s episode, we are joined by my naturopathic oncologist, Dr. Laura James.
As you listen to our discussion, it's essential to acknowledge the whirlwind that accompanies a cancer diagnosis. For many, including myself, the speed at which treatment unfolds can be both a blessing and a challenge. The urgency of medical intervention, coupled with the support of excellent health insurance and the unique circumstances of the COVID-19 era, can lead to a swift entry into what is commonly referred to as the breast cancer industrial complex.
But what exactly does this term mean? It's a new concept that encompasses medical advancements, institutional processes, and societal expectations surrounding cancer treatment. While grateful for the prompt attention and care received, there's an underlying need to address the implications of this fast-paced medical industry.
For me, and perhaps for many others, navigating the breast cancer industrial complex has raised questions about agency, reflection, and informed decision-making. The speed at which decisions are made can sometimes overshadow the opportunity for thorough consideration, prayer, and seeking second opinions—elements crucial to holistic well-being.
Together with Dr. James, we'll explore the importance of empowerment in the face of medical urgency, the role of advocacy in navigating treatment pathways, and the significance of holistic approaches to cancer care.

74. Kris Carr’s Courageous Journey Through Stage 4 Cancer, Grief, and LOVE
Thursday May 02, 2024
Thursday May 02, 2024
Today, we have a very special guest who just celebrated her 21 year anniversary living and thriving with stage four cancer.
You may recognize Kris Carr from The Oprah Winfrey Show or as the New York Times Bestselling Author of I’m Not a Mourning Person. As a cancer survivor myself, I admit to being a longtime admirer (and stalker!) of Kris's work, even before my own diagnosis. Having followed Kris as an Oprah Super Soul 100 member, Kris revealed to me, and countless others, how she gained control of her anxiety after an incurable cancer diagnosis.
In this candid conversation, we reflect on Kris's story, as a post-cancer survivor and thriver, and we celebrate her resilience and the recent milestone of her 21st anniversary since her stage four cancer diagnosis.
As Kris shares her experience, she paints a picture of gratitude and stability, discusses the quirks of tumor behavior, and being able to find levity in life's most challenging moments.

73. Does Glyphosate Contribute to Cancer? (RE-RELEASE)
Thursday Apr 25, 2024
Thursday Apr 25, 2024
This podcast made me both sad and MAD. I interviewed Glyphosate Girl, Kelly Ryerson about the damage glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup) does to our environment and our bodies.
Kelly Ryerson has spent years in the trenches explaining to anyone who would listen why this chemical is so dangerous. It’s such an easy default to just use a heavy load of chemicals to kill weeks. Did you know that there are simple alternatives to using such a large amount of chemicals in farming?
Kelly also explained to me that while this product is sold in Europe, the company that makes Roundup has created a less toxic alternative for sale in Europe. This to me is mind-blowing! If they can make a less toxic version for Europe that still works, can’t one be made for the US as well?
Kelly Ryerson works at the intersection of agriculture and health. She regularly collaborates with farmers, scientists, policymakers, and media to address agrochemical damage to our soil and bodies. She also started the news site Glyphosate Facts, which explains the link between chemical agriculture and the explosion in chronic disease. Kelly has contributed to several documentaries and news publications, co-hosts the morning show on CHDtv, and is a frequent podcast speaker. She is an Ambassador for The Rodale Institute. She has a BA from Dartmouth College, an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and completed training in integrative health coaching at Duke Integrative Medicine.
Check out Kelly’s website GlyphosateFacts.com, where she has multiple studies listed.

I admit that after thirty years in this field, I assume that most of my "health decisions" are correct.
Yet, whenever I record a podcast, I discover more things I'm doing wrong!
GRRRRR….
At this point, I have two options:
Get frustrated at everything "I've yet to do…"
OR
Understand that knowledge is power, and one day at a time, incorporate new habits that can help lower disease risk.
Of course, I'm choosing choice number 2! The small changes I make will eventually create a more significant impact.
Fast forward to my conversation today with air quality expert Michael Rubino.
Michael shared some recent studies that discovered a link between many cancers and air quality. My first thought was, "Sure, I can understand poor air quality and the link to lung cancer," but no, the study suggested that poor air quality can contribute to breast, pancreatic, and many other types of cancer.
What?!
The authors explained that pollution can impact our DNA and alter our immune response. This can increase inflammation, which contributes to cancer growth. The authors also suggested that in the case of digestive cancers, pollution can affect gut health and influence cancer development.
Okay, now what? How do we make our homes safer without breaking the bank?
Michael suggested some easy fixes, such as changing out your HVAC filter more regularly and having a good air purifier in the house.

Did you know that GUM floss is PFAS free? PFAS is a forever chemical that many top brands include in their floss, and that’s the last thing I want in my mouth!
GUM is available at major retailers, including Costco, making it easy to change your brush every three months as the dentist recommends. Happy brushing!
