I admit that after thirty years in this field, I assume that most of my "health decisions" are correct.
Yet, whenever I record a podcast, I discover more things I'm doing wrong!
GRRRRR….
At this point, I have two options:
Get frustrated at everything "I've yet to do…"
OR
Understand that knowledge is power, and one day at a time, incorporate new habits that can help lower disease risk.
Of course, I'm choosing choice number 2! The small changes I make will eventually create a more significant impact.
Fast forward to my conversation today with air quality expert Michael Rubino.
Michael shared some recent studies that discovered a link between many cancers and air quality. My first thought was, "Sure, I can understand poor air quality and the link to lung cancer," but no, the study suggested that poor air quality can contribute to breast, pancreatic, and many other types of cancer.
What?!
The authors explained that pollution can impact our DNA and alter our immune response. This can increase inflammation, which contributes to cancer growth. The authors also suggested that in the case of digestive cancers, pollution can affect gut health and influence cancer development.
Okay, now what? How do we make our homes safer without breaking the bank?
Michael suggested some easy fixes, such as changing out your HVAC filter more regularly and having a good air purifier in the house.
Give today's podcast a listen to learn how to test your home for air pollution and get more of Michael's great tips!

Did you know that GUM floss is PFAS free? PFAS is a forever chemical that many top brands include in their floss, and that’s the last thing I want in my mouth!
GUM is available at major retailers, including Costco, making it easy to change your brush every three months as the dentist recommends. Happy brushing!

71. Uncovering a Cancer Crime Story with Kate Moore, Author of The Radium Girls
Thursday Apr 11, 2024
Thursday Apr 11, 2024
This episode strays away from our usual path of interviews with oncologists and health experts. Today, we’re going into the world of crime and consequence.
I'm honored to be joined by Kate Moore, the brilliant mind behind "The Radium Girls." This book, a personal favorite of mine, not only captivated me but also disturbed me to the core.
Today's conversation isn't about your typical crime drama. It's about a crime that unfolded silently, hidden within the glow of radium, a substance once celebrated for its luminescent properties. But beneath its shimmering allure lies a dark truth—a truth that Kate's book fearlessly confronts.
In an era where crime stories dominate our screens and shelves, we often forget the crimes silently committed against our health and environment. The story of the Radium Girls falls precisely into this category—a tale of betrayal, injustice, and the insidious impact of unchecked industrial practices.
Join us as we discuss all of the unsettling details of this cancer crime story. Kate Moore, hailing from the UK, brings her expertise and passion to our conversation, guiding us through this haunting narrative.

70. If Your Mom Had Breast Cancer, Does that Mean You Will, Too? (RE-RELEASE)
Thursday Apr 04, 2024
Thursday Apr 04, 2024
This is a topic I don’t know much about, so I was looking forward to interviewing Cancer Prevention Coach and nurse, Krista.
Krista’s focus is on genetic testing because she’s tested positive for a strong breast cancer gene, and she believes it’s the same gene that caused her mother’s breast cancer.
I’ve always wondered: if a close relative had cancer does that mean I will get it too?
What can you do to prevent cancer if it’s a big part of your family history?
How “close” does the relative with cancer have to be to increase your own risk?
Are there tests that you can take to see if you have strong cancer genes?
Krista answered all these questions and so many more.
This is a tough topic, and I’ll be honest a little scary when you think about getting tested to see if you have a higher likelihood of cancer. But Krista is very clear that knowledge is power, and it’s better to understand the risks in your genetics so you can take action to lower your risk.
We had an enlightening conversation about stress and its link to cancer. We are both in agreement that organic is best when it comes to produce, but we also understand that it can also be very expensive. We discussed some unique ways to eat organic produce (she suggests eating 8-10 servings per day) without blowing your food budget.
Krista, BSN, RN, combines her diverse training in traditional medicine, integrative oncology, and functional nutrition to her work with patients at high risk of cancer due to inherited genetic mutations and/or family history. She is currently finishing her Master’s degree at Arizona state University as part of the first Medical Nutrition program in the country. Her focus is nutrigenomics and personalized cancer prevention. She has training through Harvard Medical School in cancer genomics, precision oncology, and immuno-oncology. Krista truly believes knowledge is power, and considers herself a life-long learner.
Her passion for prevention began amidst her mother’s 12+ year battle with breast cancer which was caused by a genetic mutation. Krista, who is also a carrier of this mutation, has since dedicated her career to educating herself about cancer and showing others how to decrease risk as much as possible. She wants others to understand that genetics is just a small piece of the puzzle, and that their DNA is not their destiny.
She owns a private nutrition practice in which she works closely with patients to create individualized prevention plans, and offers various courses throughout the year. Her goal is to empower patients with integrative nutrition and lifestyle modifications and teach them how to “fill their plates, and their lives, with purpose.”
To learn more about upcoming classes Krista will be offering, you can follow her on Instagram (@cancer.prevention.coach)

Conversations about health and healing often go above and beyond conventional medical treatments. Many holistic methods have been employed to supplement traditional treatment protocols and I had the privilege to talk with Liz Curran, co-director of the Radical Remission Project, about this very topic.
Witnessing her sister's battle with aggressive breast cancer ignited Liz’s passion to empower individuals in their healing. As a Certified Radical Remission health coach, educator, and speaker, Liz bridges the gap between conventional medicine and holistic approaches
Our discussion was enlightening and deeply inspiring, as we talked about the impact laughter can have on healing. Often underestimated, laughter is a potent tool against illness. Its ability to uplift spirits, alleviate stress, and even enhance the efficacy of medical treatments highlights its significance in holistic wellness.
Today, discover the unconventional approaches Liz uses to help pave the way for healing and restoration.

65. Can Acupuncture Help Prevent Cancer? with Dr. Amanda Tieu (RE-RELEASE)
Thursday Feb 29, 2024
Thursday Feb 29, 2024
Dr. Amanda Tieu states, "Acupuncture has little to no risk and helps with pain, stress, and inflammation."
She's seen many success stories, from helping couples with infertility to injured veterans who've tried everything for pain. In the case of Dr. Tieu's Army veteran patient, his Dr. suggested acupuncture as a last-ditch effort to try before getting surgery; spoiler alert, the veteran had so much success with acupuncture and pain management that he skipped the surgery!
Dr. Tieu also discussed how acupuncture can inhibit the signals from the brain that are screaming, PAIN! It can block pain signals and turn down inflammation.
I've had great success in using acupuncture to manage pain. I broke my leg snow skiing twenty-five years ago and didn't have the resources to get it fixed using surgery (I didn't have good health insurance, owned a business, and couldn't afford to take time off). I used acupuncture for pain management and inflammation. Fast forward to today, and I've trained for and completed five half marathons and surf five days a week.
I can tell you that my experience with acupuncture has been nothing but positive!
Dr. Tieu received her Doctorate degree in Naturopathic Medicine, Masters in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and License in Massage Therapy at Bastyr University. She is board certified by the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners (NABNE) and the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).
She has participated in local nonprofit organizations that sought to provide care to underserved patients, focused on acute injuries and post-recovery treatments of athletes at Bastyr’s Sports Medicine Club, and volunteered as a clinical care member at her local hospital.
Dr. Tieu believes in providing quality patient care through an integrative medical approach. She is passionate about bringing sustainable changes to a patient’s overall health. Her current areas of interest are primary care, pain management, and dermatology.

Dr. Bill Schindler told me that in 2 decades of research, he’d learned two simple truths:
Humans are sicker than ever before, and
We must learn from the ancestral past to correct the mistakes of the modern food system.
In today's podcast, Dr. S. tells us we should ask ourselves not what we should eat but how; specifically, to look at food in an ancestral way that makes the food we eat as safe and nourishing as it can be for our bodies.
Bill has spent his career studying indigenous groups worldwide and now understands that living a full and healthy life means understanding how people prepared their food hundreds of years ago.
We had an enlightening discussion about fermented foods, nixtamalizing, organ meats, and farmer's markets. He explained that our digestive tract is very inefficient and "processing our foods," for example, eating sourdough bread can allow our bodies to absorb more nutrients from the food.
His website states that our relationship with food does not exist in a vacuum. That is why diets don't work – they are always out of context because they do not consider the other aspects of "life" that are so important to us. How we acquire, process, store, share, and consume food is uniquely human and embedded in practically all aspects of our lives. So learning to eat like humans again is really about learning to live like humans again.
I HIGHLY recommend purchasing his book, taking one of his online classes, or following him on social media! Click the link below for more deets!
